Garage door repair, Portland metro and Clark County
Door stuck open or won't close? Same-day repair in most cases
When a door will not close, will not open, or traps a car, we treat it as emergency garage door repair, reach you the same day in most cases during posted hours, and usually finish on the first visit from a stocked truck.

What you are seeing
Emergency garage door repair calls start when a door quits at the worst moment, usually in one of these ways.
- The door came partway down, stopped, and now will not close
- The car is inside, and the door will not budge by remote or wall button
- A cable is dangling and one side of the door sits lower than the other
- Something cracked like a gunshot, and the opener just hums and strains
- The garage is wide open, it is getting late, and nobody can leave
- Someone backed into the door and a section is folded or out of its track
What we do on a same-day repair visit
We sort the call by what the door is doing, load parts from your photos, make the door safe, then repair and test it.
Sort the call by what the door is doing
The first questions are plain: is the door open, closed or stuck partway, is a car inside, and did you hear a bang. A door that cannot be closed, a trapped car or a door hanging crooked goes ahead of tune-ups and quotes on the day's route. A shut, quiet door with no car behind it can usually take the next open slot.
Get a photo or two so the right parts ride along
Without standing under the door, snap the whole door from outside and a close look at the springs overhead, then text both. That usually tells us spring type, cable condition and how the door failed before the truck rolls, so anything unusual gets loaded. No other step does more to keep a same-day job to a single trip.
Make the door safe before anything else
On arrival the door gets clamped in its tracks so it cannot drop or roll, whether it is open, closed or hanging halfway. A door stuck partway with a broken spring or snapped cable is the riskiest version of this call, because the opener may be all that holds it up. Whatever wind remains in the good spring comes off with winding bars before anyone touches a cable or bracket.
Repair from the truck, and free the car first
Most same-day repairs come straight off the truck: a spring pair, both cables, a set of rollers, a kinked track section straightened, an opener gear, a pair of photo eyes. When a car is trapped, getting the door open under control comes first, so you can leave even if a secondary part has to wait. A door is never left propped open on a two-by-four.
Balance, test, and close the house up
Before we go, the door has to stay where we leave it at mid-height with the opener released, run cleanly through full cycles, and reverse when it meets a board on the floor. If a part must be ordered, such as a matched section for a dented door, the door is left closed, locked and safe for the night, with the price and part date in writing.
Can someone fix my garage door today?
In most cases, yes, if you call during our posted hours. Urgent doors are slotted into the day around jobs already booked, and when the route cannot absorb one more, you hear that on the call rather than later.
Calling earlier gives us more room. A call late in the afternoon can still land today, but it is the one most likely to roll to the next opening, so send the photos even if you are not sure we can make it.
You get an honest read on where you fall in the day, not a promised minute, and a call if that changes.
What pushes a Portland same-day call to the next opening?
Mostly weather and distance. Freezing rain or a hard east wind out of the Gorge sends a wave of doors into trouble at once, and those calls all land on the same morning.
On the Sunday of the January 2024 ice storm, upward of 135,000 Oregon homes and businesses had no electricity. Outages are when doors get forced against frozen seals or released while half open, and the days after fill the route fast.
Then there is distance. The route might be in Beaverton when a call comes from Camas, and the Interstate Bridge still lifts for river traffic about 300 times a year, outside the rush-hour commute windows. Calls from the edges of our map, like Sandy, Scappoose or La Center, are easiest to fit when they come in early.
What to do while you wait for the truck
The right move depends on where the door stopped, so find your situation below and leave everything else alone until we get there.
Stopped partway or stuck open
Without stepping under the door, look up at the springs and along both cables. If everything looks whole and the door quit only because the power or the opener did, a second adult can help you take its weight, pull the red cord and ease it down. If a coil shows a visible break or either cable looks loose, leave the door up and keep everyone out of the opening.
Car trapped behind a closed door
Mention it the moment you call, because a trapped car moves ahead on the route. Unplug the opener so no one hits the button from habit. Look up at the springs before anyone touches the door: if a coil shows a gap, the door stays where it is, closed, until we get there.
Hanging crooked or off its track
Stop using the opener and keep everyone, pets included, clear of the door. A crooked door usually means a cable came off its drum or broke, and the low side can drop further without warning. Pushing rollers back into the track by hand is how fingers get caught.
Opener dead, door fine
Check the outlet and the breaker, and look at the photo eyes for a blinking light or a bumped bracket. If the door lifts easily by hand after you pull the release, run it manually until we arrive and lock it with the slide lock or T-handle at night.
What changes the price
Same-day timing is not on this list, because the price is the one posted for the repair; these are the things that actually move it.
- Which repair the door needs: remote programming sits at the low end of the card, a spring or cable job higher up
- Heavy, wide or insulated doors that take larger springs
- More than one failure at once, like a broken spring that also threw a cable
- Vehicle damage that bent the track or folded a section
- Parts that have to be ordered, priced on the first visit so the second carries no surprise
- A second door fixed while we are there
When a repair stops making sense
A same-day repair stops making sense on a door with more than one folded section after a vehicle strike, a wood door with rot through the bottom rails, or an opener that predates the 1993 entrapment rules.
For those we close and secure the opening first, then price the repair and the replacement together, so the decision can wait for daylight instead of being made in a hurry. Most other doors can be working again, with the house secure, the same day.
Same-day repair: common questions
Can I count on same-day garage door repair if I call in the morning?
A morning call during posted hours is the likeliest to be fixed that day, but it is not a promise. Same day happens in most cases, not every time. A route already full after a storm, a home at the far edge of our area, or a part that must be ordered can move the repair to the next opening.
What should I do tonight if the garage door is stuck open and the repair has to wait?
Secure the house first, then the garage. Lock the door between the garage and the living space and park a car across the opening if you can. With springs and cables intact, two adults can lower the door by hand after pulling the release. Text us photos so the parts are loaded for the next route.
My car is stuck in the garage behind a door that refuses to open. What happens first?
Your call moves ahead of routine work on the day's route whenever the schedule allows. On arrival, the first goal is getting the door open under control so the car can leave, before the rest of the repair is done. Until then, keep the opener unplugged and the door closed rather than prying at it.
Can a same-day visit fix a garage door that was hit by a car?
Usually far enough to close and lock it that day. Bent track gets straightened or replaced from stock, rollers go back in, and the door is rebalanced. A folded section has to be ordered to match, so the first visit leaves the door working or secured, and the new section goes in on a second trip.
Can you come the same day if ice has locked the garage door to the floor after a storm?
Yes in most cases, though the days after a storm are when the route fills fastest. Until we arrive, keep the opener off a frozen door, because it can tear the bottom seal or bend the lowest section. Gently breaking the ice along the seal with a plastic scraper often frees it without any repair at all.
What if the same-day technician finds more wrong than the repair I called about?
You hear the new number before any extra work starts. We show you the second problem, such as a frayed cable behind a broken spring, and price it as its own line from the same card. You can approve it, or have the door made safe and decide later; the price of the original repair stays the same.
