Clopay in Portland-area garages

Clopay is the Griffon Corporation garage door maker based in Mason, Ohio, sold to Portland homeowners through The Home Depot and independent dealers. It has made garage doors since the 1960s, with its main door operations in the small town of Russia, Ohio.

More than 3,000 independent dealers and retailers across North America sell Clopay alongside The Home Depot, so two neighbors on one street can own Clopay doors with very different insulation, hardware and installation quality.

Our company works independently of Clopay and is not one of its dealers. We fix Clopay doors of any age, look up parts by model and serial number, and install a new door when patching the old one stops adding up.

How to tell it is a Clopay

A Clopay rarely shows its name from the curb, so the clues sit on the back of the sections and in the panel and window patterns.

  • A label on the interior face, usually along the edge of a section, listing the model number, serial number and manufacturing date.
  • On doors built in roughly the last ten years, a 15 or 16 digit serial number on the inner face of the bottom section, which Clopay uses to look up the exact model.
  • Catalog panel names: Traditional Short or Long Panel on the Value tiers, Elegant Short or Long on the 3-layer Premium door, and grooved carriage panels on Gallery steel.
  • Window inserts sold as Colonial, Charleston, Stockton, Prairie, Madison or Sunset, often with removable grilles.
  • Woodgrain-textured composite overlays fixed over the steel, which point to a Coachman or Canyon Ridge door.
  • On Classic steel doors, bottom corner brackets of the patented Safe-T-Bracket design, which Clopay says helps prevent injury during maintenance.

These Clopay collections cover what turns up on Portland-area garages, from the plain steel tiers to composite and real wood.

Clopay models commonly found in Portland and Clark County homes
ModelYears soldNotes
Classic Steel Value and Value PlusCurrentSteel in 24 or 25 gauge. Value lists no insulation; Value Plus adds 1-5/16 inch polystyrene. Single-layer sections crease more easily when a bumper or bike handlebar meets them.
Classic Steel PremiumCurrentThree layers with Intellicore polyurethane foam, rated R-18.4, in Elegant Short or Long Panel. Stiffer and heavier than the lighter tiers, so spring sizing matters after any section swap.
Gallery SteelCurrentGrooved carriage house panels in 1, 2 or 3 layer steel, R-6.5 to 18.4, with short or long panels and removable window grilles.
CoachmanCurrentSteel carriage house door with composite overlays and insulation from R-6.5 to 18.4, built in four design series. Clopay warns that the wrong paint can warp or lift the overlays.
Canyon Ridge Carriage House, 4-Layer and 5-LayerCurrentComposite cladding molded to read as wood over insulated steel; the 4-layer version uses a 2 inch Intellicore core rated R-18.4.
Reserve Wood and Classic WoodCurrentReal wood, from Reserve custom and semi-custom designs to the handcrafted Classic Wood line. Clopay says wood doors must be painted or stained on all sides before installation.

Known Clopay issues and the fix

Clopay complaints come down to creased sections, lifting Coachman overlays, doors gone heavy after a section swap, and rain under the bottom seal.

  • A creased or dented section after a car or bike bumps the door

We read the serial number on the bottom section, confirm Clopay still builds that model, and order a matching section. If the design has been dropped, we lay out the choices, from the closest current style to a new door. Garage Door Panel and Section Replacement, from $449

  • Composite overlays lifting or warping on a Coachman

Clopay ties overlay warping to the wrong paint. We check that the steel beneath is sound and, since Clopay notes restrictions on Coachman replacement sections, confirm one can be ordered before pricing it. Garage Door Panel and Section Replacement, from $449

  • The door turned heavy after a section swap or a window kit

New sections and glass change the door weight. We rewind or resize the torsion springs until the door hovers in place at mid-travel with the opener unhooked. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $249

  • Rain and leaves blowing in under the bottom edge

Clopay steel doors use a vinyl seal that slides into an aluminum retainer along the bottom. We fit a new one, check the retainer for corrosion and level the door to the slab. Garage Door Weather Seal and Threshold Replacement, from $149

Can one damaged Clopay section be replaced?

Often, yes: Clopay supplies replacement sections for its steel and wood doors as long as it still builds your model, so the serial number on the bottom section decides the answer.

Color is the next hurdle. A new section in the original factory color will look crisper than its sun-faded neighbors for a season or two, especially on a south or west facing door. Some owners repaint the whole door afterward; Clopay approves quality exterior latex on its steel doors and rules out oil-based paint.

If Clopay has retired the design, if more than one section is creased, or if the steel is rusting through along the bottom, a new door tends to be the better spend. We price both routes at the door and let you pick.

Is a 1990s Clopay door on a suburban house worth keeping?

A 1990s Clopay is usually worth keeping when the sections are sound and only the hardware is worn. Insulated Clopay sections from that era often have years left once rollers, cables and seals are renewed.

Washington County and Clark County each built more homes in the 1990s than in any other decade, so doors original to those houses are now past 25 years old. By that age the springs may be on their second set, the bottom seal is often hard and split, and single-layer steel has picked up dents.

Clopay questions

Which label on a Clopay garage door identifies the model?

The label on the back of the door, along the edge of a section, lists the model number, serial number and build date. Newer doors also carry a 15 or 16 digit serial near the bottom. Photograph it before asking about parts, because sections and hardware are matched to that number rather than to the panel style.

Is 503 Garage Door a Clopay dealer?

No, we are an independent garage door company. We repair Clopay doors of every age and install new doors, while Clopay keeps its own directory of the stores and companies that sell its doors around Portland. A broken spring, a frayed cable or a split bottom seal on a Clopay is ordinary garage door work that any capable technician can take on.

Why are the overlays on my Clopay Coachman door warping?

The wrong paint is the first suspect, since Clopay warns it can warp a Coachman's composite overlays or lift them off the steel. Clopay approves only quality exterior latex on its steel doors. Strong afternoon sun on a dark door adds heat stress on top of that. If an overlay has let go, we inspect the section and price a replacement.

Is a Clopay door from The Home Depot the same as one from a dealer?

Same maker, though not always the same lineup. Clopay publishes a separate brochure of the products it offers through The Home Depot, so keep the collection name from your receipt. For repairs, the bigger difference is usually the installation: how the track was fastened, how the springs were sized and how the opener bracket was mounted. We check all three on any Clopay we service.

How much insulation does my Clopay door have?

It depends on the collection and tier. Classic Steel Premium and the Canyon Ridge 4-Layer use Intellicore polyurethane rated R-18.4, Value Plus uses polystyrene, and the basic Value door lists none. If the garage sits under a bedroom or doubles as a shop, the insulated tiers feel noticeably warmer through a Portland winter.

Do heavy Clopay carriage house doors need bigger springs?

Usually, yes, because Coachman and Canyon Ridge doors carry composite overlays on insulated steel and outweigh a plain steel door of the same size. They need torsion springs wound for that extra weight. When one breaks, we measure the old springs, inspect cables and drums, then rebalance until a hand-lifted door stays where you let go of it.
