Overhead Door in Portland-area garages
Overhead Door is one of the oldest garage door and opener brands, and around Portland it is sold by a distributor that carries the brand in its business name. Its founder, C.G. Johnson, is credited with the original upward-acting garage door in 1921.
The company also credits Johnson with the first electric opener in 1926 and now runs from Lewisville, Texas. Japan's Sanwa Holdings bought Overhead Door Corporation in 1996; the corporation also owns The Genie Company, which builds openers, and in 2009 it added the Wayne Dalton door business, so three well-known garage brands answer to one parent.
The brand reaches homes through more than 450 Overhead Door distributors, and the local one's name muddles searches for repairs. We are a separate company that repairs the brand alongside every other make.
How to tell it is a Overhead Door
Because "overhead door" also describes nearly every garage door, confirm the brand from model and collection names rather than from a company name on an invoice.
- The Overhead Door name or its red ribbon logo, a registered company trademark, on the opener or door paperwork.
- An Odyssey, Destiny or Legacy model name on the opener or in its manual, all Overhead Door opener families.
- Four-digit series numbers on the invoice, such as 5720, 5740 or 5760 for Thermacore and 7520 or 7560 for Courtyard.
- Collection names such as Thermacore, Impression, Courtyard or Signature Carriage on paperwork from the original install.
- CodeDodger rolling code and Safe-T-Beam photo eyes named in the opener manual, as on the Legacy 650.
Overhead Door models we see on service calls
Overhead Door names its products by collection and opener family rather than by single model numbers, so these rows group what turns up in local garages by family.
| Model | Years sold | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Odyssey openers | Current family | Sold in belt and chain drive versions with a DC motor, such as the Odyssey 1000. Remotes, wall consoles and photo eyes are the usual service parts. |
| Destiny openers | Current family | The Destiny 1200 comes in belt or chain drive with a DC motor the brand markets as very quiet. Travel and sensor settings are the usual adjustments. |
| Legacy openers, including the 650 and 800 | Varies by model | Belt and chain models; the Legacy 650 pairs a DC motor with CodeDodger rolling code. Older units have their own page here. |
| Thermacore insulated steel doors | Current collection | Polyurethane foamed between two steel skins, in the 5720, 5740 and 5760 series. Sections match by series, panel and color. |
| Courtyard and Signature Carriage collections | Current collections | Courtyard is insulated steel with overlays; Signature Carriage is handmade wood. Both lift as sectionals, and the extra weight falls on the springs. |
| Overhead Door openers built before 1993 | Before 1993 | They predate the federal entrapment rule for openers made from January 1993 on, so photo eyes were not required. Replace rather than repair. |
Known Overhead Door issues and the fix
Overhead Door owners call about snapped springs, creased sections, lost remotes, openers that hum while the door stays put, and leaks under the bottom seal.
-
A loud bang, then a door the opener cannot lift
A torsion spring has snapped. We fit a replacement sized to your door, or a pair on a two-spring door, inspect the cables and drums, and rebalance before the opener runs again. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $249
-
A section creased by a bumper or a basketball
Sections are matched by collection, design and color. We read the door details, order the matching section while it is still produced, and swap it without replacing the whole door. Garage Door Panel and Section Replacement, from $449
-
Lost remotes for an Odyssey, Destiny or Legacy opener
Genie lists Overhead Door among the brands its universal remote supports. We confirm the radio inside your head, pick a remote that pairs, and program it along with any keypad. Garage Door Remotes, Keypads and Smart Controls, from $89
-
The opener hums along while the door stays put
Either the release was pulled and the carriage never relatched, or the drive has worn out. We reconnect or repair the drive, then reset force and travel. Garage Door Opener Repair, from $149
-
Daylight and rainwater under the bottom edge
The bottom seal has flattened or torn. We fit a seal that matches the retainer profile on your door and check the slab for a low spot that needs a threshold strip. Garage Door Weather Seal and Threshold Replacement, from $149
Is the Overhead Door name on my invoice the maker or the seller?
It can be either, because an invoice may name a distributor rather than the manufacturer, so brand marks and model labels on the door and opener settle it.
Many companies use "overhead door" in their names as a plain description, and a door sold by any of them could be the brand or a different maker entirely. Springs are matched to the weight of the door whoever built it, but for sections and opener parts the brand decides what fits.
What the Genie connection means for your remotes
The Genie connection mostly makes Overhead Door remotes and accessories easier to find. Both brands sit under Overhead Door Corporation, and Genie names Overhead Door among the brands its universal remote covers.
For a rolling-code Overhead Door opener, a lost remote is usually a short visit. We check the receiver at the head, program the new remote and any keypad, and help pair car HomeLink if you use it. Genie's universal remote also lists Wayne Dalton, which joined the same corporation in 2009.
When an older Overhead Door opener should be retired
Retire an older Overhead Door opener when it predates photo eyes or when the board and drive fail at the same time. Openers built for US sale since January 1993 must include entrapment protection.
A worn Odyssey or Legacy with working photo eyes often deserves a repair, especially when the fault is a remote, a sensor or a travel setting. We quote the repair and a replacement side by side so the decision stays yours.
Overhead Door questions
Is Overhead Door the same company as Genie?
They share a parent but remain separate brands. Overhead Door Corporation, owned by Japan's Sanwa Holdings, runs the Overhead Door brand and owns The Genie Company, which makes openers. That is why Genie's universal remote lists Overhead Door openers as compatible. Each brand still carries its own model names and parts lists.
Are you the Overhead Door company in Portland?
No, we run a separate, independent repair business with no tie to the local Overhead Door distributor. That business sells the brand under a name that includes it. We repair Overhead Door brand doors and openers along with every other make, at posted prices, and order brand-specific parts such as matching sections when a repair calls for them.
Can one damaged section be replaced on an Overhead Door garage door?
Usually, if the collection and design are still in production. We need the door details from the sticker or paperwork, the width and the color, and then we order the matching section. When a design has been discontinued, a new door may look better than a mismatched panel, and we show both prices before ordering.
Do Overhead Door garage doors need special springs?
Generally no. Like most doors since the 1990s, an Overhead Door sectional hangs on one or two torsion springs, and the replacement is wound to match a measurement of the old one. Weight is what varies: an insulated Thermacore or a carriage-style door with overlays can be heavier than a plain steel door, and the spring has to match it.
Why does my Overhead Door bottom seal leak in heavy rain?
The seal has most likely flattened, torn or shrunk back from the ends of its retainer. November through January are the wettest months at the Portland airport, so small gaps show up as puddles then. We replace the seal with one that fits your retainer, and add a threshold strip where the slab has settled.
Can I add a keypad or car HomeLink to my Overhead Door opener?
Usually, yes, on a current model. The Odyssey 1000, Destiny 1200 and Legacy 650 are listed as HomeLink compatible, and the Destiny radio also hears wireless keypads. We confirm the radio type at the head, mount and program the keypad beside the door, and walk you through HomeLink pairing in the car. Older fixed-code units may need a receiver upgrade or a new opener before either will work.
